The Night Prowlers

This is YOUR spot to shine. If you were a fan of The Night Prowl Show, so let the world know.

Listed below are the cats n' kittens that prowled around the back alleys of rock n' roll and rhythm n' blues every weeknight with their furry leader, Matt The Cat on the 50s on 5.

White Buffalo - R.I.P.

Location: Downers Grove, IL

I love to listen to the Night Prowl Show, because of the great mix of music & information that Matt The Cat gives off to his Night Prowlers! There's a lot of music that he playes that I have never heard. The Harlem Show is just great! All of his little shows in his show give out information like: where, what year, what record label and so much more! Then on top of that, our furry leader takes all of our requests and plays them for us. I had better get back to prowlin'.

White Buffalo was one of the most dedicated and loved Night Prowlers. He passed away in December of 2006, but will aways be remembered by those of us who couldn't get enough of his always cheery "Yeah Buddy!". He always kept a positive attitude, even when times were tough and his health was failing. We should all take a page from the White Buffalo handbook of life. Be thankful for what you have and take the future as it comes. That's what I learned from White Buffalo. Yeah buddy!

The “Other” Little Richard - R.I.P.

Location: Washington, DC

I have been a fan of your channel since I started listening to XM in 2002. One of the things I truly enjoy about the channel is just your knowledge of the music (“ Harlem ” for instance. I also love the fact that each of the songs from this era actually tells a story (unlike the ‘modern' songs of today). Even my dog loves your music; oftentimes when I leave the house for work, etc., I will leave the radio tuned to the 50's channel for him. Keep up the good work and congrats on 5 million listeners.

We lost Richard's gentle soul on March 18, 2007. I only met Richard a few times and it didn't take long to notice that he had a quality that most people don't possess; sincerity. The Night Prowl mourns his loss, but we know Richard is in a better place now, groovin' to the sweet soul music.

Jossy - R.I.P.

Location: Boca Raton, FL

"Music nut all the time and accountant by necessity."

Jossy was taken from us at around 8pm on Friday, April 24, 2009 after a year long battle with breast cancer. She died in Hospice care with her family around her. Up until the very end, she was listening to '50s music playing from her laptop. I remember when she was loading that laptop and asking me for advice just a few short years ago. Jossy was a dedicated Night Prowler who loved music more than most. She knew her stuff and especially loved those who could really play the electric guitar. Her favorite was Eric Clapton, with Freddie King, Chuck Berry and T-Bone Walker close behind. Joss was one of a kind and I will surely miss her and hearing her voice on the request line.

Cross Country Kelly

Location: Washington, DC

My name is Kelly, Cross Country Kelly on the show, and I work for a Member of Congress in Washington, D.C. I drove across the country from Pacific Grove, California to Washington, without a job or a place to live, with all my stuff in the Jetta, including my 18-year-old cat, Lacey. I interviewed for my job on my cellphone somewhere in Utah and found out somewhere in Indiana that I got it. I just adore the Night Prowl Show and Matt the Cat. He's changed my life too, Brooke!

Barry

Location: San Diego, CA

I am the Transportation Manager for the largest Elementary School District in the state of California. I also rebuild 40's, 50's, 60's, and 70's cars. I am one of the lucky people who grew up in the 50's listening to the Great Disc Jockeys of that era.  Being from Pittsburgh area, I had the pleasure of listening to the Greatest of them all, Porky Chedwick. Porky was probably the first white D.J. playing Race music in 1951-1952. We had the 100,000 Watt stations from the south and southwest all night long, with all the R&B and Rockabilly that you could want. The great Doo Wop stations coming out of Chicago and New York. Matt The Cat is the best out there at the music of the 40's and 50's. He feels the music the same way that we did back then. The greatest thing about Matt and XM is that they play all the songs of the era not just the top 40.  I love the interviews with the artists that made the music that I love. My Daughter said that I'm the only person that would take the latest technology and go back 55 years to hear the past.  It is said that you can't go back, but Matt and XM makes it feel that you can.

Thanks, Matt, for allowing me to share radio time with you.  If you ever need me for an Italian Nite, I'll be there before you can say "pasta fagioli"!  For all the Nite Prowlers out there, Matt the Cat in person is just as dynamite as he is on the air.   I've been selling rock'n'roll posters, etc.,  for 35 years.  My biggest account is Tower Records.  During the week I can't seem to get out of my car while listening to the show.  Fabulous DJ, fabulous music, excellent taste!

Long Island Bob

Location: Farmingville, NY

By day, I do reconciliation for a financial services company.  But that's just to earn money to continue collecting 50's music and the affiliated background info.  XM has become the only radio I want or need, and I'm glued to Night Prowl every weeknight.  As with many Prowlers, I grew up with shows where you could mail in requests and dedications and hear them on the radio (a few days later). LI had a show where you could phone in and speak to the DJ for 30-45 seconds because he had to "announce" the next record, or read a "live" commercial.  That "personalized" format all but disappeared in the 60's and I was sure I'd NEVER see/hear it again.  But, 40 years later we have Matt and NP, and I think I've gone to heaven.  All the music, memories, and stories are back in my life.  My biological clock stopped ticking in 2003.  Along with his other attributes, our Furry Leader is also a "health-care provider."  He's personable, friendly, and knowledgable.  Who could ask for anything more?  I consider Matt a friend.  And the Night Prowlers are a group of friends, almost family.  Here's hoping it lasts forever.

Rich With His Nephew

Rich

Location: Brooklyn (grew up)

I'm Rich from Brooklyn New York.  I've had many careers in my 60 years, Banker, Insurance Agent, Marketing Manager, Realtor and now owner/operator of my own "big rig".  I discovered XM Radio a few years ago and fell in love with the Fifties on 5, especially The Night Prowl Show.  I grew up in Brooklyn New York in the 50's and early 60's on Court Street and attended John Jay H.S.  I remember falling asleep many nights listening to "The Guys" on the corner singing Doo Wop songs until Billy the cop came by on his beat and chased them off around 11 at night.  I've listened to a lot of oldies shows over the years.  Since "meeting" Matt the Cat I've come to realize that there's more to an oldies show than just the music.  Matt, the music you play takes me back to a good place in my life.....your presentation of that music is what makes it really special.

Michael Rodgers "The Honeycomb Kid"

Location: Los Angeles, CA.

I am a professional singer & songwriter and divide my time between Los Angeles CA, Nashville TN and Roatan Honduras. I have written songs for Al Jarreau, Natalie Cole, Garth Brooks, and others.  I have had the opportunity to be raised around and work with some of the greatest names in popular music from the 50's 60's and 70's.  My father is the singer Jimmie Rodgers who launched his career with the song "Honeycomb" in 1957 and has followed it up with numerous hit records since then.

Growing up in our house you never knew who was going to stop by or telephone. I remember nights where Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Glen Campbell,& Neil Young were in the living room with their guitars trading songs with dad.  I even got to talk to Elvis on the phone when he called the house asking permission to record Dad's song "It's Over" on the Aloha from Hawaii Concert Album.

I feel truly blessed to have had the opportunities that I have had and I feel deeply connected to the music of the 50's due to being Dad's son.  I was born in 1963 but feel that I was born a little too late as my connection to that era is strong.

I discovered Matt the Cat and the 50's on 5 in 2005 when I leased a new car with XM installed. What a revelation.  I now consider Matt to be a friend not only to me but to our entire family. he has been a wonderful blessing in my fathers life.

Peaches

Location: Buffalo, NY

I was given the name Peaches by my dad at the age of two, and it stuck.  I'm now 53,.  I live with my two babies, a cat Jeremy and very special poodle, Raisin.  She's my guide dog, and a true friend.     I remember, as a very young child, spending hours at a time sitting on the floor with my older sister's record player and collection of 45s. I played them all over and over, not caring if they were scratched and sounded like tin rattling through that tiny speaker.     Now, I am amazed and delighted to hear that music and so much more with incredible clarity.  Matt,  you  have answereed the question: How much better can it get?  I now have the music, the memories, and a lot of new information.  It just  doesn't get better than that!! What an honor to be a night Prowler!  Matt, may you forever be our Furry Leader!!

Pinball w/ Buddy

Pinball Wizard (aka Mike Berry)

Location: Silver Spring, MD

I grew up in York , Pennsylvania and came to the Washington , DC area in 1965.

One of my earliest memories is my parents leaving me with a baby sitter who had a record player. That was probably about 1949. I don't really remember the songs he played for me but they were much livelier than what my parents listened to on the radio. After that I was always tuning around on the radio searching for new music & I always checked out every jukebox I went by (5 cents/song --- 6 for a quarter) looking for new sounds.

I am retired now but I used to work at NBC back when they were into radio. I started there in 1968. A friend & I maintain a historical website….. www.98wrc.com You can waste a great deal of time in the control room section of the site but beware of long load times on slow connections.

I really enjoy the show.  What I like best is that I so often hear something that I have never heard before.  I don't have time to call in often but I do try to participate in the Cat Fight every Friday.

Virginia

Location: Tacoma, WA

I had the good fortune to work part time in a large Seattle record store while a high school student from 1956 thru mid 1959, as a result of this job I had the pleasure of meeting all the recording entertainers that visited our fair city.  Now that I am semi-retired I am girl Friday to a high end Interior and Garden Designer.

We have had XM radio probably since we got the 2003 vehicles; I became hooked on Matt the Cat after they allowed us to listen on our computers, as I spend much more time at my desk then I do in the car.  I just loved all his expertise of our music and all the memories some of it caused to surface.

Arnie Rosenberg (aka the "Doo Wop Maven")

Location: San Diego area

Like Blues Bob, I started listening to R&B at a young age in 1956 (I'm 56 now), and always preferred group harmony.  I grew up in Rochester, N.Y. where we could receive the New York, Chicago, Boston, Detroit, Buffalo and Toronto clear channel stations, and I used to listen to DJ's from all of those cities - Cousin Brucie, Ron Roberts and Dick Biondi come to mind.  I attended Cornell and Harvard Law School and wound up a professor of law in San Diego, but I'm still a northeastern kid at heart, remembering my red plastic transistor radio hidden under my pillow and earphone in one ear listening to the great groups of the time. Matt's "Harlem" show is amazing.  I'm particularly into the origins of doo wop and R&B, and love Matt's playing the early stuff - e.g., the Ravens, Orioles and other bird groups, the "4-5" groups (e.g., Five Keys, Four Fellows, Four Buddies).  I would love to be able to talk to Matt on his show one of these days and make a request - Consider me Fan #1.  Best wishes, Arnie Rosenberg, the Doo Wop Maven

Judy Bailley  (Judy from Canada )

Location: Grand Forks B. C.

Hi Matt, I am a 60 yr.old who still really loves the 50's music… Been married for 37 yrs., retired and a loyal listener of “Matt the Cat.” Since listening to 50's on 5 I have heard many new tunes that are not familiar…I wonder if its because they were never played on Canadian radio stations? I have become a big fan of Smiley Lewis and Jivin Gene (sp) Of course I am still the number 1 fan of Antoine “Fats” Domino… I have been a fan since the age of 4 and have had the privilege of spending an evening with Dave Bartholomew and Fats Domino in New Orleans …

I have not listened to the radio for years until I was given a xm radio for my birthday, the best thing in the world… love to hear the 50's tunes everyday, and the way Matt the Cat goes out of his way to find a tune and then plays it, fantastic!!!! I also love the idea of becoming a Night Prowler knowing I am not the only 50's groupie hee hee  hopefully I will get the chance to meet some of these other dedicated 50's listeners…Anyway, thank-you for the great tunes and Hi to all the other Night Prowlers!!!!

Nick

Location: MN

I grew up in Jersey and my teenage brother had me rocking to his 45s before I could talk. I'm a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service, so be careful or I might go postal; my wife Diane knows this! I listen to Matt and the Night Prowl show live by drinking beer (as the Real George can relate), and replay the show casing mail and running, as I'm always preparing for my next marathon. Thanks to Matt the Cat and you fellow night prowlers, the miles have never come easier. Thanks to everyone who now make my training such a joy!

Wildcat Rudy

Location: Canton, MI

I bought XM as a gift for myself a few years ago, and haven't looked
at AM or FM since then!  Friday evenings are not complete until my 7-year-old daughter Emily and I listen to the Friday Night Cat Fight!  Granted, she likes the "spastic cat" sound of the Cat Fight mascot the best, but she's also
becoming more aware of what I'm playing around the house, and requesting her favorites.  My older daughter Heather (12) has learning disabilities, but loves to sing along to just about anything she recognizes.  Whenever I'm not spinning anything from my large collection of vinyl and CDs, XM is on in the background.  It's one of the best "toys" I've ever purchased!

Location: Nashville, IN

I used to be a real estate broker and have been in construction for about three years but am re entering the 'dark side' soon and going back into sales. I started listening to the 50's on 5 in the summer of 07 and was shocked beyond belief. A radio station that plays real music and a DJ that is second to none in his presentation and knowledge of the music. While my classmates were diggin on Boston, Kansas, Led Zepplin and Aerosmith, I was playing Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Coaster's, Fats Domino, Little Anthony and the Imperials, everything and anything Doo Wop, Buddy Holly and Sha Na Na., to name a few. As a teenager and on some of my free time (when I wasn't terrorizing the local streets), I would go to garage sales with my dad and pick up ol records. I would freak out when I found a Johnny Cash on Sun or a Chuck Berry on Chess and my dad would give me the run down on these guys. That was just too damn kool! My oldest childhood music memory is of Blue Moon by the Marcels which came out the same year I was born. It wasn't until I was a young teenager that I 'heard' this song again. I was estatic to say the least. I knew it wasn't just a dream. At K-Mart or Ayr-Way I would buy every album I could afford that had 'assorted artists from the 50's'. Remember those? I never knew there was so much music to love till I caught the Doo Wop show on public TV about three years ago. Then when I heard 'the Cat cuttin the vinyl', I almost cried. I have boxes and boxes of ol records and continue to collect them. I thought I was the only normal human being on the planet. I'm not lost in the 50's cause I wasen't there but I am into hot rods and nostalgia drag racing and especially gassers and altereds! My dear ol dad used to tell me stories of the street corner singers. Thank God I had the dad I did who allowed and encouraged me to appreciate the the most enduring music of all time. It's the only time I ever listened to the man. Like that was tuff...... I would welcome emails from any Night Prowler and my address is:Email Eddie Thanks Matt! I often wonder if I feel the same way about my favorite DJ and his shows as the teenagers did about Wolfman Jack in American Graffitti. Yeah...it's kinda like that. The 50's on 5 and Matt the Cat have brought my appreciation for the music full circle and for that, I am eternally grateful. Now my subscription is gonna go up, isn't it?

Krista

Location: Northern Minnesota

I'm 19 years old and in March I will be going to Wyoming for college and I'm really excited about going. I am going to college for Street Rod and Custom Fabrication with Collison Refinishing. I plan on becoming an Auto Restorer and Customizer and open my own shop.  I started listening to 50's music after I started going to car shows about 3 or 4 years ago and ever since then it's all I listen to. My favorite song is Little Bitty Pretty One by Thurston Harris. It has changed my life. I seem to be taking life a little less serious then I was before. Just letting myself go and have fun. I listen to The Night Prowl Show all the time. It's helped me and my Grandparents become closer. I get song ideas and buy them then give them to my Grandparents. And just this last Christmas I finally got my Grandma that was in a car accident a few years ago to dance with me. And she was throwing me all around the family room. I just wanna say Thank You for playing such great music and keep it up!!!

Karen Mozley-Sparks

Location: Somewhere in California

My name is Karen and I am 49 years young. I am also a truck driver and for now i run only in California which is ok because I am a native Californian. Finding 50's on 5 was one of the best things in my life because I've always loved the music from that era and was not able to find it in abundance anywhere. Most of the music was before i was born or while i was an infant but i have it on good authority that I was boogying in my diaper and although i no longer wear a diaper (for now Thank God) I'm still boogying to the best music and the best XM channel on Earth. Thanks Matt the Cat and 50's on 5.

Big Jim and Swing Dance Susie

Location: Sanger, TX

Susie and I both grew up in Dallas, her father was a policeman and mine was a Baptist preacher, and you know what they say about the children of conservative parents; yes, we were slightly on the wild side. Susan is a true child of the fifties, her father in 1955 bought a small dive in Oak Cliff called the Drive Inn and she was car hopping at the tender age of 14. At 16 she got her first real job, working the soda fountain at the local drug store. The druggist fired her that first summer for making the sundaes to big, but I suspect that it was really the fact that she was and still is a real looker and that there was a horde of young men around trying to flirt with her.
Susie did date a lot, (this before I knew her), doubling up with her best friend Marcy. She saw Elvis in the Cotton Bowl at the State Fair of Texas, Jimmy Reed and Big Joe Turner at the clubs down in Deep Ellum and several other rock and roll shows that came through the area.
I grew up more in the sixties, but I loved Little Richard and Chuck Berry. Naturally, I was one of those guys that wanted to play rock'n'roll Guitar, but I lasted only about a week touring out on the road and I knew that was not the life for me. So I decided to do something useful with my life; I became a potter.
Susie and I work together at our studio and showroom, Small House Pottery, in Sanger Texas. We travel the country, (listening to xm), going to art shows and selling our work. We are also avid dancers, swing and ballroom, and since we travel we have danced all over the U.S.. We even have our own ballroom in our home. The house and the studio are almost always filled with music, usually 50's and on week nights usually Matt the Cat!

Donald "Darigg from DaBronx" Riggio

Location: Las Vegas, Nevada

You pronounce 'Darigg' = Da (ridge).  I'm a 57 year old retiree living in Vegas writing an epic novel based on rock and roll music circa 1953  thru 1969.  I came to the music of the 50's when I was teenager in the 60's and formed what would be called a garage band, except none of us had a garage.  We were city housing project kids and probably the only local Beatle era band mixing street corner harmony and early R&B in our repertoire.  My wife Carol and I see and love all the oldies acts that come here to Vegas to perform and we sorely miss those Richard Nader shows that are put on back east. I've been an xm listener since April and love all the shows on 50's on five, especially anything Matt's involved with.  "There's good rockin' tonight" when Matt's on the air that's for sure.

Patty Walker

Location: Shenandoah Valley, VA

I am originally from MD. I moved to the Shenandoah Valley in 1999. The town I live in is Woodstock and reminds us very much of the 1950s. It is a quiet town with very nice and kind people. When I first got XM Radio in 2004, I found Matt The Cat and I thought I was really living in the 50s era. I am a big Baltimore Orioles fan and love to watch the game on TV and listen to Matt on the radio. Matt and his show are a big part of my entertainment and when I have company over, they love the show as much as I do. Matt, thank you for the many hours of good, entertaining shows.

Paul

Location: Michigan

Hi, I'm Paul from Michigan. I work for GM and here I am representing
Cadillac Mtr. car Co. in the Auto show Jan of '05. We had a lot of fun and
got to meet a lot of different people. I'm not always in the plant, when I'm
on the road with my fifth wheel camper which is often I aways have the
fifties on five tuned in. Unless of course our furry leader is not on live,
then I tune to Bill Mack the XM satelite cowboy from Shamrock Texas or
Bluesville. But wherever I am, at home, at work, or on the road, I am wired
to XM thru my computer or of course at GM which started XM in it's vehicles.
Keep doing what you're doing Matt, don't change and you will go far.

Tony

Location: Long Island, NY

My name is Anthony Desgro (Tony from New York) and I live in Patchogue, about sixty miles east of New York City on Long Island. I am 57 years old and apparently have a lot in common with Bob Mates. I have also been blind since birth (my optic nerve never fully developed)b and I was also deeply affected by Elvis's version of "Hound Dog." It became the first 45, though I did get a copy of "The Ballad of Davy Crockett" on 78 about a year and a half earlier. Little did I know then that I would become an avid record collector and listener to music of the fifties and sixties. But then again, I had all the great New York d.j.s, headed by Alan Freed, to stimulate my interest. I also like the music of the 1940s and some of the 1970s, but the fifties and early sixties period is my favorite musical era. I am a retired planner from the Town of Brookhaven, so I have loots of time to listen. I've only had XM for a year, but it's the best thing since WCBS FM became an oldies station in July of 1972 or since "The History of Rock and Roll" was originally broadcast in the winter of 1969. Matt, as much as I am familiar with the music, I always feel I can learn something by listening to your shows, both "Harlem" and "The Night Prowl", and I make it a point to listen as much as possible. Judging by the content of conventional commercial radio, I don't think anyone could have predicted that there would be such a great haven for the fans of this music as XM provides, and I have basically abandoned the dregs of conventional radio. Maybe the "experts" there could learn something by tuning in to XM and, especially, to Matt The Cat. Like Bob Mates' dog, my dog, Cc, also gets a daily healthy dose of XM-5, and I let it play for her when I leave the house. Matt, thanks for everything and for giving the music the national exposure and respect it deserves.

Todd

Location: St. Louis, MO

Born and raised here in st. louis  34 years old, i owe the wonderful 50s era to my dad. He POISONED my ears and head with that devil music as i grew up! (how could i ever repay him for that?   I got him xm for life!) I owe rythm and blues to my Furry leader, Matt, he has forever changed my music appreciation! I like to boat and play hockey and enjoy my family. My occupation is  Crime scene cleaner. I have been self employed cleaning up gruesome messes for 10 years now!    Thank you very much...

The night prowl show , well , its hard to put into words, I feel like i am in the 50s , its best when noone is home. I close the door and lay on the bed and close my eyes and well, basically time travel, that sounds strange, but, its what i do.  I imagine i am in the 50s era, and i guess i kinda play pretend.  I am envious of all who witnessed the birth of Rock and Roll. The first television broadcast of Elvis. I can only imagine what that was like. My dad graduated in 58 and i have questioned him to his limits. Matt the cat is a super person! I hope he makes millions, because there is millions worth of talent. I have never been taken by a show as i am by his. My kids would rather listen the the night prowl show than watch tv. Need i say more!  The little girl you all hear by the name of Brooke, is my daughter!  Keep up the good work Matt!

Adam

Location: St. Louis, MO

My name is Adam Mcclenning. I live in St. Peters, Missouri. I am 12 years old, in the 7th grade. I am Todd's son and Brooke's brother! I play the guitar. I enjoy the 50s and 60s music. My dad got me into it. Some of my favorite groups are Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, The Clovers, The Everly Brothers, and Big Joe Turner. One of my favorite 50s song is Bird Dog, by The Everly Brothers. I also play ice hockey for the St. Peters Spirit. I owe my love for rythm and blues to MATT THE CAT. I got to go give some soul to someone who desperately needs it.

Brooke

Location: St. Louis, MO

I am 9 years old, in the 4th grade, I love the 50s music, especially, "I got loaded" Peppermint Harris.  I love listening to the night prowl. I love the Friday night Cat fight! I love Matt the Cat, He is sooooo nice to me.... I love to call the show as much as i can!  My occupation is fixing sick animals and being a wonderful daughter and an evil sister! HEEE HEEE The 50s music has changed my life, it amazes me how much i feel it! I owe it to Matt!

Daryl

Location: Alpine, CA

Hi!!  My name is Daryl and I live in Alpine California.  I'm very happy to see that there are other fans of true rock 'n roll here in San Diego County on this forum.  My favorite artists include Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly and BB King.  I was once lucky enough to work in a small radio station.  My office mate was  "Two Gun" Noel Confer, one of my favorite DJs when I was a kid.  I'm looking forward to participating with everyone in some lively discussion of our favorite music.

We got XM radio 3 months ago. You've heard of a life changing event. Well XM radio is a life changing event for us. Our lives will never be the same, and its all for the good.
David thought he knew a lot about 50s music, but it was just a drop in the bucket compared to Mr Matt's knowledge. We learn from him every day. What a great way to spend the evening, listening to Matt the Cat. And Harlem, OHMIGOD! What a fabulous show. With a Cat like that you don' need no other. Thanks, Mr MattCat

My name is Jay Coburn, a.k.a. Billy Jay I am the resident soul music fan and official Sam Cooke dictionary. The Drifters and The Coasters are my favorite groups. I've been listening to the fifties for nearly a year but have become obsessed. I am a high school junior who hosts fan clubs dedicated to his favorite artists. Sean Coppock

Location: Ohio

I currently work for UPS located at the Dayton International Airport. All through my childhood there was music playing in the house.  Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn, George Jones, Tammy Wynette etc etc. You name it it was played. For Christmas last year I was given 2 XM radios. One is in my home and one is in my truck. I was very pleased when I saw the channel lineup and there was a 50's station listed. I have a good collection of oldies myself and am always amazed at the number of great songs I hear still. Some of which I was able to find and purchase. I have my radio on in my home a lot during the evening hours and I listen to the Night Prowl every evening. Matt never fails to impress me with what he plays. My hat's off to Matt the Cat. And a special salute to all the Night Prowlers who keep requesting all the good oldies.

The Night Prowl show has given me a great chance to learn about songs that at one time I didn't understand if they were doo wop, rockabilly or R&B. We have a great leader, have fun and hear from Night Prowlers across our land. Don't forget the Friday Night Cat Fight!

I'm Carol, the truck driver who hauls toilets a lot.  I run out of my company's terminal in Greenville SC but they domicile me in Charlotte NC, close to where I live.  I've been married to my husband for nearly 29 years and since he still turns me on something must be working right.  My passion is needlework, and if I'm not driving I'm probably stitching.  I also enjoy reading murder mysteries and thrillers, and I love going to junk sales, yard sales and flea markets to add to my collection of old glassware.  Matt helps me get farther down the road.  He is slowly but surely making a blues fan of me.  I've always liked 50's music, but Matt has introduced me to Harlem and folks like Ray Charles, Lloyd Price, Lavern Baker, Etta James and Percy Mayfield.  Thanks Matt--------------I can't turn a wheel without you!

Formerly a Disc Jockey, jack of all trades, truck driver and bus boy at Bob's Big Boy restaurant. Matt the Cat and the night prowl show "have been berry berry goood to me" It's a place to forget the wows and problems of the moment and "return with us to those thrilling days of yesteryear" Yes, as the night prowl unfolds nightly I return to those care free days of the 50's, the great moments and pleasant memories of sock hops, fast talking D.J.'s and simpler times. Than Matt opens the mike and it all goes away!!!! Nah, just kidding Matt. Your truly an enjoyable experience. That last sentence is a quite from Matt's girl friend.

Many people remember 1957 as the year they could stand in their front yards and watch Sputnik pass overhead.  For me, 1957 had a bigger significance: that was the year a friend of the family gave me my very own radio!  That radio was magic – night after night, I would listen to people sing their hearts out about things that really mattered.  Where did they come up with those words?  This poor guy is not just broke, he's down to a thin dime!  And the melodies?  How can you not sing along?  Back then, it wasn't country, or western, or rhythm or blues, it was just music, and people telling their life stories.

For me, the Night Prowl show has brought back the magic to radio – just great music and people telling their stories.  I love hearing from the other callers, and of course all the background information from Matt the Cat.

I may have been born in 1962 but the music I love started long before...Albert Ammons, Pinetop Smith & Perkins. But in april of 1974 I was blown-away by my all time R&R hero Jerry Lee, when I saw him jump up on top of a white grand piano during a performance of Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On, on the Mid-Night Special been hooked ever since. JLL is the reason I learned  to play boogie-woogie on the piano.  And as far as radio, no Disc jockey has interested me since Rockin' Ray of  1110 WBT in Charlotte,NC and his Sunday Night Hall Of Fame radio show found its way into the radio at my childhood home of Waynesboro,Va. When he left the air I left (exept for Rush) the AM band ..Until now...Matt the Cat is responsible for my abandonment of the FM band!!  I drive coast-to-coast for Warrior Xpress and I always listen to the "furry one". And Matt as long as you are on the air, I will never leave the audience! I only need one cat...keep up the good work.

Discovering the Night Prowler show has been the Best thing since finding WLAC = 1510 in Nashville in 1959.  Listening to Ernies Record Mart , White Rose Petroleum Jelly, and Royal Crowm Hair Pomade shows with all the " Race Music " and those COOL Disc Jockeys I believe one was Called JR and another the Hossman.  Our local station in Lansing Michigan played mostly " White Covers " and no originals.  I remember the 1st time I heard little Richard was hiding in a friend bedroom closet so his parents wouldn't hear it an take it away.  Now I relieve the moments everynight with Matt the Cat and on Harlem with all the added insight and knowledge.   Matt keep on Prowlin and howlin you are the MAN.

I love listening to the Night Prowl show because of all the information Matt gives out about the songs and the artists. I also like the listeners calling in. I've been a fan for at least five years. I listen every night while I drive a tractor trailer to Orlando. My favorite songs are the blues. I listen to this channel and there isn't a song I don't like except one, "Ain't got no home". I can't say that about other channels. If I can't listen to Matt I'm always changing channels trying to find something I want to hear.

Mr Fred

Location: Prosperity, South Carolina

Ms Sandra and I were married in 1962 and moved to South Carolina in 2001, after I retired. We love it down here and have met some of the nicest people you would ever want to meet. We live on Lake Murray where I'm currently in the process of trying to catch every Largemouth Bass in the lake at least once (catch and release). It's a dirty job but somebody has to do it.

Ms Sandra and I grew up in Waynesboro, Virginia and were high school sweethearts listening to the same music that Matt plays for us on the Night Prowl. Our song back then was Only You by the Platters. We listened to R&R on WHBG out of Harrisonburg, Virginia and then late at night we'd listen to the big AM radio stations on the skip from Chicago, New York, Boston, and Buffalo.

We started listening to MTC in 2005 when we purchased a car equipped with an XM Radio. As the salesman was showing us the new features he turned the radio on and it happened to be tuned to XM5. Brother Ray was just ending Night Time Is the Right Time and then The Killer lit it up with Breathless. I hadn't heard music like that in years. I'd given up on radio years ago because the music they played was the pits. We've had the car for going on three years now and I don't believe the radio has ever been turned off or tuned to another station than XM5. I also listen to XM5 on my INNO, DirectTV, and on XM Radio's website.

I've heard many DJ's in my years but in my opinion none have come close to Matt the Cat. Not only is he a master historian of R&B and R&R but he's created an environment where Night Prowlers get to know each other by their requests, phone comments, and on his website. They are my Night Prowl family and Matt is our furry leader. His Harlem show is fantastic! Thank you Matt the Cat!

Garry

Location: Williamson, GA

Growing up in Central New Jersey, listening to New York radio Jocks,  such as Murray The “K”, Scott Munie, Cousin Brucie, Harry Harrison, Herb Oscar Anderson in the morning, and later on Wolfman Jack,   was part of a very musical family, got involved with playing keyboards in a local band playing church dances and neighborhood functions, later graduating to bars and clubs.   Tried my hand on college radio, WVMS, at that time it was a small AM station, doing 8 to midnight oldie and top 40 shows once a week for 4 years (1967-71).  Almost took that next step, but we're leaving that to the real professionals, like Matt.  .  Continued with  live performances with the rock group INFERNO, with some touring and playing spots along the Jersey Shore and having too much fun.  Hosted and MC”D a few oldie shows at some of those clubs with acts such as the “Duprees”, The “Drifters”, and “Ruby & The Romantics”.   Still in the music business today, with an entertainment company featuring mobile DJ Services, Trivia and Karaoke, which is still very big in the Atlanta area .

Discovered the Night Prowlers show kinda by accident driving home from a Trivia Show late one Thursday night, (it's a 2 hr drive).  Was just driving along, singing and enjoying the 50's music when I heard Matt's closing theme song, “HARLEM NOCTURNE”  by the Viscounts, my all time favorite sax instrumental slow song I used for “rubbing music” way back when!!    I was immediately hooked and absolutely make the Thursday Night show my priority and tell everyone I know about it.  The songs I hear back bring so many happy memories of growing up, coming of age , old friends and a simpler time  and way of life.     I listen other times also, but Thursday is my favorite, followed by the Friday night Cat Fights!!

PS  Matt told me where I could get a copy of that song, which I now have, Thanks Matt.

The Norm

Location: Burlington, Ontario Canada

I was born and raised in Toronto Canada where I spent my "Happy Days" in the late fifties and early sixties. Life as a teen was marvelous and the music of that era greatly influenced my life thereafter. I was in a band (of course) that played Rock'n Roll but because of a lack of talent I did not make it too far (two of my associates did but that is a different story). I got married young, had two kids and finished University while trying to support a family. That was tough. I have lived a fairly good life with many ups and downs. (I'll write a book someday.).  I had another daughter 23 years after my first. I dearly love all my three children (2 daughters and a son). Music was always my "great escape". There were times it kept me sane.  I was a DJ (not on radio) for about 16 years doing weddings, parties, banquets, and the ocassional bar mitzvah. I loved every minute of it and I was great at it. These last nine years have found me married to a wonderful woman enjoying a more subdued life after retiring from an IT (Information Technology) career. However, I may go back to work yet just so I can afford the expensive sound equipment everyone keeps talking about.

The show takes me back to the "Happy Days" and Matt has managed to re-introduce me to tunes I missed or I had forgotten. I enjoy the variety and the information that accompanies the artists and their songs.

Ulysses

Location: Kirtland, NM

Hey everyone I'm Ulysses I'm from Kirtland, NM, I'm 18 and in college. I love to listen to 50's and 60's because as a kid thats all I heard. When I'm not studying I'm tuned in on the 50's. Some of my favorite artists are Sam Cooke, Pat Boone, Roy Orbison and Gene Vincent. I think Guy Mitchell is my favorite artist cuz thats what I always request when I call up Matt the Cat. The Night Prowl Show just intensifies my passion for the 50's. It also keeps me on track so when a couple of old timers talk about Chuck Berry or Henry Mancini I'm not in the dark.

Hey there matt I'm 29 years old a fan of both your shows The Night Prowl and Harlem. I work at a recycling center at NAS Whidbey, where I have  been working there since 2001, and have been listening since I first got xm in jan. of this year.  I am really enjoying hearing the first decade of Rock & Roll again I've been listening to this music for as long as I can remember.  I used to play alot of my uncles old 45's and full vinyl albums on my grandparents old turntable they had. One of the first records I remember listening to was the Tokens The Lion Sleeps Tonight and the soundtrack to American Grafitti. I especially make it a point to listen in on friday nights for the friday night cat fights.  You are most defenitly the coolest DJ on XM radio thanx for keeping this music alive,  and I hope to keep listening to you for years to come.

Barbara (AKA Baby Girl)

I also wanted to tell you, I was really not into the 50's musics, more of a Pop, Hip Hop and Rock type of girl. Then My boyfriend turned me on to your show. We plan our Fridays around your "Friday night cat fight". Now I am hooked, and a big fan! You take the D.J thing to a whole new level. I love the added hi-lights you give us about the artist/song etc. I have a early prediction for you......... It's all about ROY . Mr.Orbison will be the first Star inducted into "THE ALLY OF FAME" and rightfully so. The "Big O" has it all, a voice that can cut through you, hook you and take you with him where ever he wants to go. Thank you Mr. Matt for making our Friday nights a blast!

I am 28 years old i grew up in Indiana, i drive a truck for a living and right after i started driving in 2005. I bought an XM right away. I have enjoyed early Rock'N'Roll as well as Classic Country for quite some time, and when i heard the Night Prowel show for the first time it was so good that i had the volume to the max! and i have had you on ever since. The way you present yourself on the air is like no other DJ it is so unique, and diffrent it is realy cool. I also like how you tell the story's behind a song or an artist that is as equaly as important as the song it's self. I would like to say hi to all the Night Prowlers out there and thank you Matt keep on spining that wax my friend.

Retired Traffic Manager with a large structural steel fabricator in St. Louis, Mo. Music:  I graduated High School in 1960, & obviously grew up in the era of this great music.  I was a radio "nut" in the 50's, back in the AM bandwidth era, & my hobby was picking up stations all over the country & listening to what they were playing.  Anyone remember the 50000watt station that was in Texas & had their transmitting tower in Mexico for legal reasons?  One of my favorite DJ's was Dick Biondi with WLS in Chicago.  My roots in DooWop & Rockabilly are deep & this show is a priceless trip back in time!  Continued success, my furry friend.

Bob Mates (Blues Bob)

Location: Pittsburgh, PA

Hi, Matt and everyone: I'm 55 years old--older than dirt, in other words! I've been blind since birth.  (My twin brother and I were premature.  We were given too much oxygen.  He got the sight, and I got the good looks and personality! hahahahaha) I've been a rock 'n roll fan since 1956.  That was the year that three things happened: I started hearing R4'nB.  records by Fats Domino, LITTLE Richard, Etc.; I heard my first record by Elvis, "Hound Dog", and became a fan of his music for life; and I both met and heard Porky Chedwick, the Daddio and the Raddio! At six, there seemed something almost magical about Porky and his talk.  Matt evokes that same magic today! I'm the director of the Pittsburgh Lutheran Center for the blind, which we stared in March, 1999.  I also travel around the country, opening up other outreach centers for the blind, with my Leader Dog, Max, known as
Maxy-wax.  (He ran for President in 2004, figuring that he could lick any of the other candidates!) I love the 50's channel, and especially, Matt's show.  I listen to "Harlem" just about every week, and I love the Friday Night Cat Fight! To me, Matt is the best thing going anywhere! I would love to be a Night Prowler.  This computer won't send pictures, and, besides, I'm tired of breaking cameras.  I'm happy to be in such an elite fraternity as the Night Prowlers.  God bless all of you! Blues Bob Mates and Maxy-wax
