3/6/09 – Friday Night Cat Fight – “Need You”

This week’s Friday Night Cat Fight is a battle between 2 very capable ballad singers, Donnie Owens and Johnny Jack. Donnie cut the song in mid 1958 and it hit #25 on the pop charts. In 1962, Johnny Jack recorded a version of the same song and it was a big hit in the Pittsburgh area, but not nationally. Listen to both versions of the song, which are found near the end of the Cat Fight Podcast and decide which version you like better. Voice your choice by voting below.

Great; much better cat fight this week, though I enjoy hearing anything you post. The NP snippet recorded by Judy is good too, and I even remember hearing that for the first time. Thanks so much for everything you do!
Need You we really do !! Yum Yum
Was a senior in high school when Johnny Jack’s version hit the air waves in Pittsburgh…..and it’s the only version I can identify with….and I feel it’s the better of the two……
Again; Thank you Matt, the cat fight this week was great! Both versions are truly worthy of the number one spot. But the Donnie Owens recording speaks to my soul.
A Friday Night Cat Fight with two songs I’ve never heard before. Wow!!
My vote goes to Donnie Owens. His version has more soul.
We “Need You” back on the air, Furry Leader
Really enjoyed the broadcast but am a little confused. How can you do this Matt without paying royalties???
It sure brings back great memories of when listening to XM was enjoyable.
XM won’t be the same until your returned to your Scratch Post in the Satellite. Once my 5 year plan runs dry I’ll probably leave.
Really enjoyed the podcast, please keep them coming!
Tonight’s a tough call, but I’ll end up with the Donny Owens version, just ‘cuz it felt right.
Hi Matt,
I still have the Donnie Owens 45 of Need You. In my entire life, except for somebody when I was 7 years old, you are the only one I have heard play it. And, having said all that, I voted for Johnny Jack. I had never heard his version. I thought he sang it well.
I worked on the road with donnie owens in the mid 70’s he was a good friend and a great performer. Donny was killed by a girl friend a few years back, it was an accident. I sure miss hem.
