“Get Out Of My Life Woman”

This week, our Friday Night Cat Fight is a 4-way over the classic soul/funk tune, “Get Out Of My Life Woman”.  The tune was written by New Orleans legend Allen Toussaint and originally recorded by fellow New Orleans legend, Lee Dorsey in 1966.  Solomon Burke, Joe Williams and even Toussaint himself have recorded great versions of the tune.  Many others have covered it, but I think these FOUR stand on their own.  NOW, which one do YOU dig the MOST?  Listen to the podcast and vote below for your favorite.

Interesting this week; that’s about all I can say. I voted for the last version, as I really dug the piano and was glad it was mostly instrumental.

I don’t think I had ever heard any version of this song before, I thought Solomon did the best job. Thank you again Matt BTW Amazon has shipped my copy of the Buddy Holly box set I can’t wait to hear it.

I am partial to Lee Dorsey, having heard him on WWL AM doing all of his classic hits in real time, but Toussaint’s version is funkier, reminescent of the Meters. He owns this tune!

The horns on this cut really cook, and Toussaint’s piano make it a “must-have” tune for any collector of Nawlins funk.

I gave my vote to Lee Dorsey tonight. I love the way it just chugs along, and yet the mix is understated. Good stuff for sure.

For me it was a fight between Burke and Williams, I voted for Burke. Great as usual.

For a while I was a true believer in the Burke version, but dorsey won me over.

Not only has the song been covered all over the place, but I heard at least 2 samples too…
Dr. Dre on the Chronic album and the Jamie Cullem song “Get Your Way,” Solomon Burke and Joe Williams respectively.
