R&B Profile
This week, I’m dedicating the entire podcast to one of the most influential and yet underrated R&B vocal groups of all time, The Robins. The pinnacle of West Coast Doo Wop, The Robins were discovered by Johnny Otis, when they entered a talent contest at his Barrelhouse Night Club in Watts in 1949. They recorded for a variety of labels over the course of the next 12 years. I present to you the highlights of a long career in R&B, including the stories behind the story on this great vocal group.
In 1960, Wanda Jackson did a great cover of the Robins 1954 classic, “Riot In Cell Block #9”. Listen to the show and then decide for yourself which one you truly DIG the MOST!

As much as I love Wanda Jackson I did vote for The Robins, their rendition just flowed so much smoother. Long Island Tony (Tony Desgro) said that The Robins also did a very good version of “Now And Then There’s A Fool Such As I” does anyone have a copy to share with Matt so we can all hear it?
This is why I miss HARLEM so much.
I have it, Virginia. I’ll send you a copy so you can hear it.

One of the best shows ever! I went with Robins, too but Wanda Jackson was a great challenger.
What a great show about the Robins. It reminded me so much of the old Harlem shows. Fantastic job, Furry Leader. I also enjoyed the replay of the interview about the coasters. It was kind of fun, looking through the notes to that set, while listening again to the interview.
As far as the Cat fight is concerned. There’s no contest. The Robins had it all over Wanda. Her version was lame compared to the Robins.
Thanks for all the great tunes and times, every week. I really look forward to them.
KEEP ON PROWLIN!!!!!!!!!! You’re the best, Furry leader.
I did enjoy Wanda’s version but I voted for the Robins. I also thought they did a great job on I Love Paris. Miss you Matt.
Great show – ditto what Steve in Arizona said.
While listening, I looked up the Robins on Wikipedia,… but there’s nothing there. Our furry leader continues to spread the word to us kids who otherwise wouldn’t know.
