My Funny Valentine

Rodgers and Hart wrote “My Funny Valentine” for their 1937 musical, “Babes In Arms” and over the years it has become a true classic.  So many great versions of this song exist, but for the sake of sanity, I have chosen 4 to compete in this week’s Cat Fight.  Please listen to all four in their entirety and then vote for the one you DIG THE MOST!  Happy Valentine’s Day and enjoy Mardi Gras.  If you’d like to hear last years New Orleans Mardi Gras Cat fight, please click here!

I love them all, but I have to give it to Chet on this one, simply because of a lovely memory associated: You sent out a very personal dedication to me early on in our relationship, when I was ill and listening to your show. I listened to it over and over!

I’d really like to vote for Deacon John Moore in the close-out track, but between these four, it’s a close call for me between what I found to be two equally fine vocal performances by Sarah and Johnny. I ended up voting for Johnny Mathis who I thought had a more interesting instrumental arrangement behind him.

Johnny Mathis’s version made me feel good all over. They were all good but Johnny will get my vote. I hope that Matt and Kelly recover from shoveling snow by Valentine’s Day. Looking forward to hearing the Mardi gras show again it was very good.

It was between Sarah and Chet this week for me. Chet got my vote because he created a certain “mood” for this song in my mind, very soulful. Yum Yum, good restaurants, I enjoyed Lundy’s years ago as well. MTC, great FNCF, thank you for what you do for all of us each week.

It was close for me this time, and I first had to get over the fact that you played something so slow and romantic, rather than the bluesy and soulful genre that you are usually stuck in. I liked them all, but guess I’ll go with Johnny’s version this time. Kelly, I remember the dedication sent out to you when you were ill. MTC didn’t give your name at that time, but said the song was for someone who had come to mean a great deal to him within a short time. I would have voted for Chet too, had that version been dedicated to me by anyone. Stay warm and happy Vals to everyone.

It was 100% Chet for me.

Hmmm…Had a split between the girlfriend and I over this one. She liked the Johnny and I liked the Chet. I thought the intro to the Johnny M version sounded a bit to Christmassy she found the Chet version a bit to straight forward. We both thought the production and vocalization got in the way of the song in the Sarah version. I would have liked to hear an original broadway version – all these versions seem a little slow and haunting for broadway.
