1/22/10 – The “Jo-Ann” Cat Fight!

This week, two groups will fight it out over a girl, “Jo-Ann”. The Twin-Tones were real twins (Jim & John Cunningham) and they even performed “Jo-Ann” on “American Bandstand” at the end of 1957. The song didn’t go anywhere until early 1958, when 3 guys from Waterbury, CT cut the tune for Roulette Records. The Playmates would go on to hit #19 with their “Jo-Ann”, BUT which version is better? Listen to the podcast, decide for yourself and VOTE! Also, Sam Cooke was born on this day in 1931, so Sam makes it on the podcast as well.

Wait a minute!!! What about the Dreamlovers ‘Calling Jo Ann’?
btw, Jo Ann is my wife’s name.
The Two Tones were “Too Bland”, elevator music. The Playmates had better harmony, backup singers and ‘sax’ appeal. Also, Sam was really Cook-ing!
Playmates for me, although both were good, if you like elevator music. (I agree with Eddie there.) Always liked the Playmates’ harmony and their choices of songs
I had a girl friend her name was Jo Ann !! And its The Playmates for me hands down !!! By the way i did have a girl friend by the name of Jo Ann in the early sixties but she looked alot like Joannie Sommers and not Jo Ann Campbell !! Just a little bit of the Story of my life ! Yum Yum
It’s The Playmates by a wide margin. I can’t believe RCA didn’t place the twins with a better producer. It could have done wonders for them. They needed a better back-up voice behind them, and the rest properly mixed.
I agree with all the rest The Playmates did alot better job. You had Sam Cooke really Cooking!!!!
Looks like we may have another landslide, I also voted for The Playmates. Sam sounded real good. Thank you again Matt
It’s a rather obnoxious song, the Playmates made it just that much more obnoxious by adding grating back up singers. I also object to the Playmates album cover – three guys on a scooter looks dangerous to me!
Donny of the Playmates is my sister-in-law’s father, had dinner with he and his wife Joann last night, we all know her as JoJo. Just discovered the Cat Fight Program via Rocket Radio. Both Donny & Joann are doing great, every once’n while Donny still does a great solo of Beep-Beep for the kids.
I’m Donny of the Playmates. One of my buddies listens to you and brought your clip to my attention. Thanks for the recognition.
