The Friday Night Cat Fight keeps those summer vibes coming with part 2 of my 3 part series on the summer theme.  This week, we hear The Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, The Four Buddies and Jonathan Richman just to name a few.

Listen to all three definitive versions of the classic “Summertime Blues” and vote for the one you just can’t start your summer without.

Great; even better than last week, and that was also really good. You threw me a curve ball, Matt; the heading said “4-29”, not 5-29, but we had a laugh about it anyway. Eddie got my vote this time, as I liked everything he did. Keep it up; we look forward to this every week. Thanks!

I am surprised to see that someone other than Eddie has been voted for. His version is way over the top. Thanks again for a great show Matt.

I voted for Blue Cheer fully expecting this to be a Cochran rout. I love Eddie too– who wouldn’t??– but I’ve always had a special place in my heart for the Blue Cheer version, and as Matt suggested, the “Vincebus Eruptum” album from which their cover of SB sprang was a landmark in rock history. There are other great versions of this song, too. I probably heard the Beach Boys cover before Eddie’s version, though I remember Eddie’s, too, from my childhood. And country artist Alan Jackson had the song’s rockabilly roots in mind when he did a great job covering it in the 1990s. Anyway, another great show of familiar and unfamiliar tracks, Matt. Thank you!! Scratch on!!!

I voted for Blue Cheer because it’s a great homage to Eddie, and I think had he lived, he’d have dug this the most. Great show as usual, Matty!

    Yo Furry Leader
I gotta say that, this week’s summre songs show was fantastic. Even better than last week’s. However, the cat fight was a no brainer. Eddy had, and always will have, the definitive version of summertime blues. If his version weren’t in the running, I would have gone with the Who. At least theirs was closer to the original. Blue Cheer totally reworked the song, until it was almost a different song. Besides, I’m tired of Blue Cheer’s version. It seems like it’s on evey 60s compilation album ever made.
I also liked your comparison of the bass lines between Ricky Nelson and the Blues Magoos. It is identical.
Can’t wait to see what comes up next week.
Keep up the great work, and keep on prowlin.

Finally got some friends who had never heard the FNCF or Matt. They were blown away! The Four Buddies tune was quite a treat too.

Unanimous 7 votes for Eddie. I can’t believe I even listened to Blue Cheer version was out and I think I even thought it was cool then.

Just gotta make another comment, not on the song or show itself, but so glad to see CCK posting a comment! I know she benefits even more than we do from your great knowledge of music and superb collection, and it would be great to hear her some time, if she would want to put some words on the show too. All my best to both of you in every way!
