You want the Friday Night Cat Fight to continue on the web and so it shall. Thanks so much for your tremendous response to the Cat Fight's "test" week. I had over 600 hits to the Cat Fight web page and 241 votes. This was larger than any Cat Fight ever held on XM Radio. I am so thrilled that the Cat Fight continues to make prowlers happy.

This week's Friday Night Cat Fight highlights the greatest teenage tragedy song of them all and represents a first in Cat Fight history as I go out of the realm of the 1950s and early 60s. Every Halloween on The Night Prowl Show, I'd feature "Death By Teenage", my tribute to teenage tragedy songs. This Halloween, we may not have a Night Prowl Show and tons of teenage tragedy songs and ghost stories, but at least we have a Friday Night Cat Fight.

Remember, the voting doesn't close on these new Cat Fights, so check back often to see who's in the lead. Vote any time you like (if you're a purist, you might wait til 10pm EST before voting like back in the old days). If this "test" Cat Fight is successful, I'll consider doing Friday Night Cat Fights every week on the internet. We don't need XM to have a Friday Night Cat Fight, do we? I say, NO WAY!

One advantage to the internet version of the Cat Fight is that no one will be shut out due to the overloading of the phone lines, which was often the problem with the Satellite Cat Fight. So, click on this link, Friday Night Cat Fight and listen to the audio file of the 2 songs competing for your vote this week. After you listen to the audio file, go back to your web browser and choose the version of the song you dig the most, from the simple poll beneath the audio file link. Good luck and happy Cat Fighting. The voting doesn't end, so we'll keep a running tally as the days and weeks pass.

Please let me know if you like this version of the Cat Fight and if I should continue doing it on the web each week? Email here at mattthecat.com.

Keep On Prowlin'!

Dear Night Prowlers,

As many of you know, last night (Oct 15th) was my final Night Prowl Show with XM Satellite Radio's 50s on 5. I hosted the Night Prowl for 7 years and 4 months and it was the greatest experience of my life. Getting to know each of you and share some of the greatest music ever made was something that I will never forget. During the Night Prowl, we got to meet some of the legends of Rock n' Roll (Sonny Burgess, Dale Hawkins, Lloyd Price, Billy Vera etc) and share a lot of good times and great stories. We danced, we laughed and we cried.

Last night as I was packing up the studio, I played some of Yum Yum's annual Christmas poems and even found some of Cross Country Kelly's old phone calls. Now, she's my wife and we are very happy together. Believe me, XM gave me as much as it gave you, if not a little more. I met my wife because of XM and it was XM that gave me the freedom to do what I do and to truly be myself. Every scream, every yell and every "Lawd have MERCY!" came from a real place deep down in my heart and soul. I meant everything I said. I felt it for real and in turn, I think you felt it too.

But alas, all good things must come to an end and we did have a very good run. Sirius XM has had to make some serious cuts in staff and that is why they have let me go.

Honestly, I have no idea what I am going to do next. I'd love to end up in a major radio market somewhere and I hope syndication may also be an option someday soon. I've often told people that there is NOTHING like the feeling you get from being LIVE on the radio. It's an indescribable feeling. Thank you for being a part of that for so many years.

Please check my website often for updates. I will also keep this update list active, and will contact you all again when I have some good news. Now that I have some free time, I think I'm gonna update the website and add many new items, including complete playlists for every Harlem show that ever aired. Speaking of Harlem, I hear that XMX (Channel 2) will be running Harlem shows all weekend, but I'm not certain about that. Check it out as it will probably be your last chance to hear the show that was the light of my life. I have more pride for my Harlem shows than most everything else I've ever done. I'll also be adding more interviews to my online archive so check that often as well (http://www.mattthecat.com/Interview.html)

It's hard to say goodbye, so let me quote the great Neil Young when I say, "It's better to burn out than to fade away". Last night, we burned out (like a radio tube), but we will NEVER fade away. Keep your ears open and I'm sure you'll hear Matt The Cat yelling and howlin' from somewhere. Yeeeeaaaaaahhhhhhh!

Thanks for helping me to keep Rhythm & Blues, Rock n' Roll, Rockabilly and Doo Wop alive. You can't kill the good stuff. We shall meet again, my Prowlers, just never forget your "fury leader".

And remember, you got to keep PROWLIN' and don't EVER stop. Because the day you stop prowlin', will sho' enough be the day you die".

Love and soul,

Matt The Cat

Email Matt

Harlem - Week of 9/29/08 - Atlantic Records Story: Pt. 1

We remember Atlantic Records co-founder Ahmet Ertegun...

The Atlantic Records Story

Part One

Atlantic Records was the most important R&B record label of all time. This week on Harlem, you'll get the back story on how Atlantic signed Ruth Brown, The Clovers & Professor Longhair through a vintage interview with the late Atlantic co-founder Ahmet Ertegun. Atlantic began in late 1947 with a number of killer jazz releases before they scouted out and signed their R&B talent; Ray Charles, Chuck Willis & Ivory Joe Hunter. Nappy was born on October 12, 1929 in Charlotte, NC and raised on the spiritual sound of gospel music. As a young man, he sang in the local Charlotte gospel group, the Heavenly Lights. He was signed to Savoy Records in 1954 and switched over to secular rhythm & blues. Nothing sounded like Nappy's "Don't Be Angry" when it hit the air in 1955. Nappy told me that Ray Charles didn't release his version of "The Right Time" until Nappy's version had "cooled" off. Ray's would become the standard, but it is heavily based on Nappy's interpretation of the song. I had the privilege of interviewing Nappy last October as he promoted his fantastic new album "Long Time Coming". Shortly after the album's release, Nappy became very sick and his health only deteriorated from there. I'll be playing back that interview as we honor the late, great Nappy Brown tonight on the Night Prowl Show.

Earl Palmer
1924 - 2008

Billy Vera says of Earl Palmer, "... a good guy and maybe the greatest studio drummer of them all." That's a great way to sum up Earl Palmer in one sentence. He died in his Los Angeles home after a long illness on Friday, September 19 at the age of 84.
He was a great studio drummer during the early to mid 1950s in New Orleans, playing on almost everything Fats Domino, Little Richard and Smiley Lewis cut. He worked on hundreds of sessions at Cosimo Matassa's famous J&M studios in New Orleans. By the mid-1950s, he decided to give LA a try, which he soon conquered. Palmer appeared on records by Eddie Cochran, Frank Sinatra, Ike & Tina's "River Deep, Mountain High" and even the Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling". So, as you can see, Billy Vera was right on the money when he said that Earl Palmer may possibly be the greatest studio drummer of them all. Now, that's a backbeat I can dig.

Earl was inducted into The Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame as a sideman in 2000.

I will feature some of Earl's best studio drumming on tonight's Night Prowl Show.

Harlem - Week of 9/22/08 - Savory Records Story w/ Billy Vera

This week Billy Vera co-hosts as Harlem features...

The Savoy Records Story

Savoy Records is primarily known as a jazz label (with such artists as Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus and Lester Young on its roster), however, Savoy made quite a contribution to 1950s R&B and Rock n' Roll as well. He was there for the rock n’ roll revolution and did his part with his mid-1950s hits for Herman Lubinsky’s Savoy Record Label. He tells the story behind the story of R&B classics like “Don’t Be Angry”, “The Right Time” (which he cut before Ray Charles), “Little By Little” and “Open Up That Door”, as well as some revealing tales of what it was like to tour in the 1950s and work with the miserly Lubinsky. Don’t miss Nappy Brown, all week on Harlem.

Harlem Airs On The 50s On 5:
Monday 9/15 at 1pm ET
Tuesday 9/16 at 9pm PT – midnight ET
Friday 9/19 at 6pm ET
Sunday 9/21 at 11am ET

Harlem - Week Of 9/8/08 - Nashville R&B!

Harlem Takes A Trip...

Nashville Rhythm & Blues

Nashville has always been known as the home of country music, but this week HARLEM turns Music City into a rhythm & blues mecca. We'll dig deep in the vaults and shine the spotlight on the great vocal groups, band leaders and blues shouters that came out of the King label before the rock n' roll "explosion" of the mid-1950s. You'll hear Little Willie John, Wynonie "Mr. Blues" Harris, Roy Brown, The "5" Royales, The Swallows and many more. It was like he was always there and now at age 91, the great record man, producer, journalist Jerry Wexler has left this Earth. In the 1940s he was an accomplished music journalist for Billboard Magazine, coining the phrase "rhythm and blues" to describe black recordings. Up to this point, Billboard referred to its black records chart as "race records" or even worse, "sepia records". Jerry found a phrase that was not only more musically descriptive, but also far less insulting and divisive.

Ahmet Ertegun, the co-founder of Atlantic Records brought Jerry Wexler in to replace his departing partner, Herb Abramson in the early 1950s. Under Wexler and Ertegun, the label continued to thrive as Ray Charles hit his creative peak and R&B slowly turned into soul music. During the mid-1960s, Ertegun began to focus more on signing the rock n' roll acts (Cream, The Young Rascals, Led Zeppelin) while Jerry stayed true to his R&B/Soul roots. He produced some of the greatest soul records of all time for the likes of Aretha Franklin and worked closely with the musicians of Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL and Stax in Memphis.

He published one of the greatest books on the music biz in "Rhythm & The Blues: A Life In American Music". Jerry Wexler was a true American music pioneer and should always be remembered for his great contribution to the art form we love so much. I bet Ray Charles is filling Jerry in on all that's gone on as they jam in that place where all the great spirits go. He controlled every aspect of the business from recording, record pressing, album jacket printing and even distribution. He got into the R&B market in 1947 with the signing of Bull Moose Jackson. Bill Wax from XM's Bluesville and Matt The Cat had the privilege to speak to Floyd only a few months before he died. This week, "Harlem" looks back on the amazing career of Floyd Dixon with many of Floyd's stories told in his own words. From the original "Hey Bartender" (covered by The Blues Brothers) to "Dallas Blues" and "Call Operator 210", Floyd was a blues original. His story airs this week on "Harlem".

Harlem Airs on the 50s on 5
Monday 7/21 @ 1pm ET
Tuesday 7/22 @ midnight ET - 9pm PT
Friday 725 @ 6pm ET
Sun 7/27 @ 11am ET

This one’s for Floyd!
Matt The Cat

Harlem - Week of 7/14/08 - Elmore James

"I'm gonna get up in the morning and I believe I'll dust my broom"

Robert Johnson may have said it first, but it's Elmore James' 1951 recording of "Dust My Broom" on Trumpet Records that will live forever as the definitive version. It's all about gettin' to where you're going (Destination Love) and beyond. I just hope we don't get stuck (Flat Tire). Joe Turner came up from the pre-war boogie woogie underground and became a post-war blues shoutin' success. The late 1940s were very good to Joe, but it was the 1950s that would prove to be his career highlight. Even though he was already in his 40s, Big Joe's music became an early proponent of rock n' roll. This Harlem show is accented through interviews with music historian Billy Vera and the late Ahmet Ertegun of Atlantic Records. Find out why Big Joe Turner is the true "Boss Of The Blues", this week on Harlem.

Harlem Airs on the 50s on 5:

Monday at 1pm ET

Tuesday at 9pm PT - Midnight ET

Friday at 6pm ET

Sunday at 11am ET

-MTC

Harlem - Week Of 6/23/08 - The Cleftones

The Cleftones

This week, Matt The Cat talks to two original members of one of New York's greatest '50s vocal groups; The Celftones. It's the most revealing HARLEM ever!! His sweet, angelic tenor was first put to gospel singing, but in 1950, it turned to secular music when Clyde joined Billy Ward & The Dominoes. After scoring numerous hits with The Dominoes, McPhatter left to form his OWN group, The Drifters. Depression, alcoholism and the changing sound of R&B would eventually ruin his career and his life, but this week HARLEM remembers one of the true great, CLYDE McPHATTER.

HARLEM airs on the 50s on 5:
Monday 6/16 @ 1pm over NYC
Tuesday 6/17 @ 9pm PST - midnight EST
Friday 6/20 @ 6pm EST
Sunday 6/22 @ 11am over Boston

Harlem - Week Of 6/9/08 - Bo Diddley Remembered!

Bo Diddley

1928 - 2008

This week Harlem pays respect to the true originator of rock n’ roll, Bo Diddley. When Ellas McDaniel burst on the scene as Bo Diddley in 1955, he took the entire world by surprise. No one looked or sounded like that in the mid 1950s. Matt The Cat tells Bo’s story and plays some Diddley classics you’ve never heard before, such as the original “Love Is Strange”, which was written and originally recorded by Bo (a year before Mickey & Sylvia would have a #1 hit with it). Let’s remember Bo for what he was; a creator, a trailblazer and a man who wasn’t afraid to be himself and sound different. We get behind the beat, this week on Harlem.

Harlem Airs on The 50s on 5:
Monday, 6/9 @ 1pm ET
Tuesday, 6/10 @ 9pm PT – Midnight ET
Friday, 6/13 @ 6pm ET
Sunday 6/15 @ 11am ET

-Matt The Cat

Best Summer Song Poll!

The Night Prowl Show's

Best Summer Song Of All-Time POLL!

Help us choose the Official Night Prowl Summer Song!

Thanks to all the Night Prowlers who nominated summer songs over the past week.
